Day Two in Berlin

Since we had spent the afternoon the day before on the guided tour, we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted to see and do on our second day in Berlin. Before we hit the town, though, we slept in. After almost a week of non-stop travel, it was nice to take our time and sleep in a little bit.

Once we got ourselves together and headed out, our first stop was the Berlin Wall.  The part of the wall that everyone thinks of (the part with all of the graffitti) wasn't on our tour the day before since it's kind of out of the way, so we definitely wanted to go and see it on our own.  I'm so glad we did because not only is it an iconic part of German history, it's just really cool.

I love this.  It goes with everything I believe.

Probably the most famous part of the Berlin Wall

Mike and I were both surprised at how much graffitti was on the wall over the actual art work.

I remember....

Mike thought this one was picture worthy.  Thanks  bud.

After the Wall, we were starving and headed out for lunch.  I settled for Hawaiian pizza (ham and pineapple), while Mike was more adventurous and had the currywurst pizza.  His review was "I don't think currywurst and pizza really mix."

Looks appetizing, doesn't it?

We continued our site seeing
Iconic TV Tower

We went to the DDR Museum, which is a really cool interactive museum that shows what life was like in East Germany. Let's just say I'm glad I didn't live there!  There were a ton of school groups there and the kids were really enjoying it, but I liked it, too.  I think Mike would have enjoyed it if it hadn't been so crowded (I couldn't move to get the camera out, hence the lack of pictures).  If I were doing it again, I would have gone to that first thing in the morning.

After the DDR Museum, we headed to Museum Island and just walked around.  Most of the museums were pretty crowded, so we didn't go into any of them.  Plus, we were pretty museum-ed out at that point.  It was late enough in the day that we would have only had time for maybe one museum, so we just walked around and admired them from the outside.

After Museum Island, we headed back to the AirBnB and dropped our stuff before heading out for dinner.  Mike and I had been really excited for dinner in Berlin because it's such an international city.  Izmir is not.  We have been craving Mexican food since we got to Turkey.  There was a Mexican restaurant in Izmir that opened up, but in true Turkish fashion, it closed after a week.  That being said, we knew that when we were in Berlin, we HAD to get Mexican food.

The owners of the AirBnB had a binder full of recommendations and one of them was Santa Maria's Mexican Restaurant.  It didn't let us down.  I had a quesadilla and Mike had enchiladas.  If we needed another reason to stay in Germany, these were two very good reasons. So so good.

It started raining around dinner time, which was also kind of exciting. Turkey has had the same weather ever since we got there.  Hot and sunny.  It's great beach weather and definitely perfect for summer, but I miss the afternoon thunderstorms.  This rain was not quite at that level, but it was kind of exciting.  We settled in at a bar, grabbed a few drinks and listened to the rain before calling it a night.
